Nail
trimming methods:
- Have a friend assist you. While one of you
scruffs
your ferret by the skin on the back of its neck (as a
mother carries a kit) the other can carefully clip the
nails. When scruffing a ferret let their bottoms dangle
and they should go limp. Be sure to support their
bottoms so you don't injure their backs. This does not
hurt your ferret but should make it go motionless.
- If you have to clip your pet's nails unassisted, or
if your pet refuses to be scruffed, you can try putting
a drop of Ferretone (or other liquid treat) on your
ferret's belly. Place your pet in your lap with its back
against your legs and stomach and its stomach pointed
upwards. Most animals will be so interested in licking
up their treat they won't even notice you clipping their
nails.
- Some owners have luck clipping their pet's nails
while their fuzzy is sleeping. Many ferrets will sleep
so deeply they won't even wake up!
- Some owners like to finish with a few quick brushes
of an emery board to smooth out the nails and help
prevent snagging. This is probably unnecessary unless
you are showing your ferret and hoping for extra points
on maintenance!
